From the author: This
book is designed for young chessplayers who are making their first steps in the wise and
attractive game. Chess is a brain fight, where one wins, who is the wisiest, the most
prepared, the most able of opponents.
Chess studies will undoubtedly be useful for everyone. They help one to develop logical thinking, concentration, knowledge to analyse both chess and life situations, moreover, they help to strengthen one's character.
Chess is a difficult activity; it requires a good deal of brain and spiritual effort. To be successful in competitions, one should study it regularly. But first of all one should see simple combinations. This is the aim of this book.
How should it be used? You should solve all exercises without chessboard and chess pieces. During a lesson you solve from 6 to 30 exercises. They are arranged according to difficulty and divided into 5 levels. There are altogether 1,320 positions in the book; the set was tested during my 25-year practice of teaching beginners. The teacher can play his lessons, provided that every pupil has a copy of the manual. I wish everybody learned chess basics successfully and went farther along the difficult and interesting road of chess mastership.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE): The book is designed for teaching children, either in groups with a teacher or at home with parents, during quite a long period of time beginning from the very first steps.
